VTT Technical Research Centre

VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland has a number of research projects on improving energy efficiency that needed help in commercialisation. For starters we gave the related teams insight on software business development process, some typical software business models, and several different ways to commercialise research findings and prototypes.

As the core of the project, we had a deeper look into two research projects. With one, we reviewed the current software maturity and what business models could be utilised to turn it into a commercial software product. For the other, we identified three different business opportunities on how the existing software could be utilised to start creating revenue and what would be needed to ramp up each one. In the final report, we gave recommendations on how to proceed with commercialising both projects.

In the course of the project we created a set of criteria that can be used by VTT themselves to evaluate software maturity. Feedback from the research teams was positive. They got a great deal of insight into software productisation and the software development process.

The project was run in an agile way: reviewing what was done at the end of each week together with VTT and planning the following week based on the findings. This allowed us to maintain flexibility with focus and scope, but at the same time keep price and schedule fixed.

Our customer contact Sanna Öörni describes the help as follows: “We were very satisfied for the practical and professional support for our software commercialisation project. We got exact insight and hands-on help that was needed to make the decisions.”
